The Empire Strikes Back Special Edition Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Special Editions Star Wars Episode 5 Five Episodes v 5th Fifth The Empire Strikes Back Negative Box Office Gross Utter Complete Sabotage of Star Wars Episode 6 vi Six Return of the Jedi Box Office Gross Mega Failure

13. Did the box office failure of The Empire Strikes Back reduce the money earned by Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi in cinemas theaters and multiplexes?

Most Star Wars fans and movie audiences in general don't understand how the box office gross system really works. The more successful the original film is then the more potential this gives the sequel continuation movie for success at the box office in multiplexes around the globe. Given that Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope had the highest box office gross in theaters of all time 30 (thirty) years ago, this provided Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back with an excellent chance for massive box office revenues equal to or even greater than A New Hope.

However, a sequel movie isn't guaranteed success no matter how popular the original film was with cinema viewers. Ultimately, the sequel film has to stand on its own, which The Empire Strikes Back was unable to accomplish. At the time in 1980, The Empire Strikes Back was a very, very extreme major disappointment for most true Star Wars fans. First, there was no proper resolution to the story for The Empire Strikes Back. This sequel ended with several cliff hanger plot points, which wouldn't be resolved for three excruciating and torturous years until the cineplex theatrical release of Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi.

Second, movie director Irvin Kershner (Kersh), who incompetently directed The Empire Strikes Back, had no clue what he was doing because Kersh had no experience at all in creating high budget Hollywood blockbuster movies. The story idea for The Empire Strikes Back, which was written by George Lucas, was massively ingenious and infinitely brilliant. Obviously, Kersh ruined this promising plot premise with an inability to properly direct complex action sequences and crucial Star Wars character interactions. A total failure by Kersh in every way we can measure and more.

Third, The Empire Strikes Back was such a critical and financial mega flop fiasco that Lucas didn't allow either Kersh or movie producer Gary Kurtz to work on the film production of Return of the Jedi. Lucas blamed Kersh and Kurtz for nearly destroying Star Wars. However, the damage had been done. Many of the fans of A New Hope lost interest in Star Wars. The average Star Wars fan watched A New Hope dozens and dozens of endless times in theatres multiplexes. This constant repeat viewing in cinemas movie venues is what created the massive unparalleled box office gross for A New Hope.

This didn't happen with The Empire Strikes Back. Not close at all. The loyal Star Wars fans watched The Empire Strikes Back once in cineplexes if Lucas was real, real lucky, but the fans didn't return in large numbers for subsequent viewings in cineplexes around the globe. This explains why The Empire Strikes Back disastrously earned less than half the astounding box office earnings of A New Hope in cinemas. When May 1983 finally arrived, Lucasfilm had already expended much money on advertising and promotion of Return of the Jedi.

However, the horrific negative memories of The Empire Strikes Back held Return of the Jedi back at the worldwide box offices. In the end, Return of the Jedi was vastly more successful in multiplexes compared to The Empire Strikes Back. Yet most of the individuals, who were avid about A New Hope, didn't show up to watch Return of the Jedi based on the intense massive disappointment these fans experienced watching The Empire Strikes Back in 1980.

As a result, even Return of the Jedi was a relative box office disaster earning slightly more than half the box office gross of A New Hope. It turns out The Empire Strikes Back is the greatest form of financial sabotage ever created by Humanity with no possible equal. Not ever. Special thanks to Kersh for ruining our childhood memories. Thankfully, our prayers were finally answered by Lucas producing the perfect Star Wars movie episodes called the Star Wars prequel trilogy. We will be stunned by the Star Wars prequels for all eternity.
