Box Office Gross Disaster

2. Why did Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back earn less than half the total worldwide box office gross at cineplexes multiplexes of Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope?

The primary detriment of those few fans, who claim The Empire Strikes Back is the best overall Star Wars movie, is the dreadful nearly nonexistent box office gross of Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back in theaters cineplexes in 1980. The only objective means to value and rate Hollywood films is by the amount of money these said motion pictures earn in multiplexes cinemas around the world. The higher the box office earnings in movie houses theatres, then this logically means the more successful the movie is with audiences.

The fact that The Empire Strikes Back grossed less than half the box office revenues of Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope in cinemas multiplexes proves without doubt that The Empire Strikes Back is a wholly inferior movie experience when compared to the triumphant A New Hope, which is written and directed by genius mastermind film maker George Lucas. If a sequel film is better than the original movie, then the sequel movie will equal or surpass the original movie in theatrical box office earnings.

There are many notable examples of sequels making more money than the first film in the movie franchise. For instance, Terminator 2 Judgment Day from James Cameron earned more than ten times the worldwide box office gross of the first Terminator movie. The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers and The Return of the King both surpassed The Fellowship of the Ring in total box office numbers. Likewise, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, At World's End and On Stranger Tides made vastly more money than the original Pirates of the Caribbean film in cineplexes theaters.

Additionally, each subsequent X-Men film earned more than the one preceding it. To run up the score even further, The Dark Knight was without question the most financially successful Batman movie of all time in cinemas multiplexes around the Earth. It made significantly more money than all prior Batman movies. More recently, Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon vastly out grossed the first Transformers movie at the theatrical box offices worldwide. What this definitely proves is that if a sequel movie is better than the original movie in the film series, then the sequel will do as well and perhaps even better at the cineplex box office when compared to the first or original film.

No matter what the apologists of The Empire Strikes Back may claim today, they can NEVER explain away the fact that The Empire Strikes Back is the lowest financial earner in theatres multiplexes of all the primary Star Wars movie episodes, not including the computer animated Star Wars The Clone Wars movie. The nightmarish results of The Empire Strikes Back in cinemas theaters in 1980 proves solidly that The Empire Strikes Back was a huge disappointment and letdown for most if not all fans.

This was also proven with the cineplex release of the Star Wars Special Editions in cinemas theaters in early 1997. A New Hope Special Edition took in twice as much money at the box office when compared to The Empire Strikes Back Special Edition. If The Empire Strikes Back truly was the best and most special Star Wars film episode, then this would be backed up with scientific evidence. To make matters worse if such were even possible, The Empire Strikes Back has sold the fewest DVDs, VHS video tapes, action figures, video games and whatever other Star Wars collectibles you care to mention when directly compared to the other astounding Star Wars movie episodes.

In the final examination beyond the ability to question, The Empire Strikes Back was the most disappointing sequel movie on all fronts that can be measured in the history of cinema. To this day, George Lucas is haunted by the complete and utter failure of The Empire Strikes Back. Thankfully, Lucas made up for these horrendous mistakes by writing and directing the perfect and spell binding Star Wars prequel trilogy, which remain more successful than any description can provide.
