The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Episode 5 Five Episodes v 5th Fifth The Empire Strikes Back Abject Failure Massive Huge Disappointment Causes Long Long Delay of the Movie Film Production of the Perfectly Majestic Spectacular Star Wars Prequel trilogy
18. Did the unparalleled failure and very, very infinite extreme disappointment with the final results of Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back cause George Lucas to delay the movie production of Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace for over fifteen years?
Most movie audiences don't realize none of the current Star Wars movie episodes represent the true and pure vision of George Lucas, who is the stunning mega genius creator of Star Wars. Being the best friend of Lucas and existing as the only person Lucas fully trusts, I've known for over 15 (fifteen) years that Lucas was disheartened and devastated by the final results of the Star Wars classic trilogy especially in particular concerning Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back.
It's impossible to capture the vision Lucas has for Star Wars with the overly primitive special effects technology of Human civilization. In order to see inside the mind's eye of Lucas, it would take a film production budget of over $ 5 billion U.S. dollars and 35 (thirty five) hours of movie footage to satisfy what Lucas really wants from Star Wars.
Obviously, nobody (not even the vastly mega uber wealthy Lucas) can afford to spend a multi billion U.S. dollars in costs and many, many hours of running time for a single movie. The most expensive Hollywood blockbuster motion pictures cost about $ 250 million U.S. dollars with running times well under three hours. However, the three most financially successful high budget movies all last for over 3 hours plus in duration.
These movies are:
1. Titanic
2. Gone With The Wind
3. The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King
Lucas has NEVER had the luxury of massive movie budgets for the Star Wars movies. The entire cost of all three Star Wars classic films is under $ 70 million U.S. dollars. Adjusted for today's monetary inflation, this would equal around $ 180 million U.S. dollars. In direct comparison, each of the Star Wars prequel episodes cost roughly $ 115 million U.S. dollars each individually.
Also, the primary Star Wars movie episodes having running time durations of around 2 hours and 20 minutes on average. Lucas has never been able to afford three hour Star Wars movies with ultra massive production budgets. As a result, all the Star Wars films have restricted the vision Lucas has for Star Wars. In fact, Lucas was so upset with the final results of The Empire Strikes Back that Lucas temporarily questioned whether he should even produce Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi.
To understand why Lucas was so dejected with The Empire Strikes Back, you need to remember that The Empire Strikes Back was a relative box office failure in cinemas multiplexes theaters by earning less than half the box office gross of Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope. However, a mere half of A New Hope's box office was still enormous because A New Hope was the most profitable motion picture of all time thirty years ago.
Obviously, Lucas had to film Return of the Jedi because it was needed to complete what Lucas had planned for the redemption of Anakin Skywalker at literally the last possible second at the conclusion of Return of the Jedi. Lucas was so upset with what happened regarding the Star Wars classics that Lucas refused to begin production on Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace until after the 20th (Twentieth) Century Fox movie studio would agree to finance a desperately needed revision of the classic Star Wars movies.
Twentieth Century Fox provided Lucasfilm with about $ 10 million U.S. dollars for the Star Wars Special Editions. All fans agree that the special edition versions of classic Star Wars are mesmerizing improvements over what we had to unfortunately witness in 1977, 1980 and 1983. Star Wars fans were so ecstatic and blown away with the Star Wars Special Editions that the 1997 cineplex theatrical run of the Star Wars classic trilogy was the most profitable multiplex re-release of films in the history of cinema. The combined cinematic box office revenues for the Star Wars Special Editions was over $ 400 million U.S. dollars worldwide.
However, the Star Wars classics are still no where close to being what Lucas is willing to accept, but Lucas is now too ancient and too busy working on the new Star Wars TV television series shows to spend more time working on the main Star Wars movie episodes. Even the epic, grandiose and brilliant Star Wars prequel trilogy don't represent what Lucas sees in his unparalleled ingenious intelligent mind. However, Lucas has always stated that making movies constantly compromises your artistic vision because a film maker never has enough money or time to really complete a movie to the director's satisfaction.
