The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Episode 5 Five Episodes v 5th Fifth The Empire Strikes Back George Lucas Panics Big Time By Choosing Not to Direct Irvin Kershner Horrendous Choice For Director of A New Hope Sequel

3. Why did film maker George Lucas NOT direct The Empire Strikes Back?

After watching the spectacular mega movies called the Star Wars prequel trilogy, modern fans from the new generation can't understand that George Lucas doesn't write and direct all previous Star Wars films. The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are easily the top three films from one director from the past decade. No film maker can exceed the combined writing and directing ultra genius of Lucas. As a result, most fans from today are shocked and hopelessly devastated that Lucas didn't direct Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back.

The fans can NEVER forgive Lucas for hiring a third party director for The Empire Strikes Back. It's difficult to explain why Lucas panicked after Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope and decided not to direct The Empire Strikes Back. Unfortunately for all of Star Wars fandom, this turned out to be the worst mistake of Lucas' entire life. A tragedy still suffered by the fans nearly three decades later. The primary reason Lucas passed on serving as the movie director for The Empire Strikes Back is because working on A New Hope nearly killed Lucas literally.

Creating A New Hope was the most terrifying and horrendous moments Lucas has so far encountered. Nothing went right when Lucas was making the first Star Wars movie. The film sets in Tunisia constantly kept getting destroyed by the weather. The 20th (Twentieth) Century Fox film studio gave Lucas a tiny, tiny production budget, which means every aspect of the film making process for A New Hope was an impossible struggle. The British film crew thought Star Wars was going to be the most abhorrent science fiction movie in history and they were actually embarrassed to be working on it.

Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) had to create the necessary special effects techniques to capture the unparalleled vision Lucas had for A New Hope. Suffice it to say that Lucas thought Star Wars was a complete disaster. Lucas was certain that Star Wars was going to end Lucas' film writing and directing career. 20th Century Fox also had no idea what kind of box office behemoth Lucas had created. Cinema owners around the entire United States of America had ABSOLUTELY no faith in Star Wars at all to such a degree that only a few dozen theaters would agree to showcase Star Wars in their cineplexes in May of 1977.

Of course, in hindsight, Star Wars was the greatest idea in the history of cinema, but that was far from certain in the months leading up to the theatrical debut of A New Hope. By the end of 1977, A New Hope was the most financially lucrative motion picture in the history of Hollywood. Lucas was in deep shock beyond belief at the box office achievements of A New Hope. The unfathomable success of A New Hope took Lucas by such complete surprise that Lucas panicked BIG TIME when production began on the sequel film called The Empire Strikes Back.

Because Lucas believed that movie studio interference ruined his first two films called THX 1138 and American Graffiti, Lucas decided to self finance the movie budget of The Empire Strikes Back from the monetary profits Lucas earned from A New Hope. Lucas didn't want 20th Century Fox having any influence over the creation of The Empire Strikes Back. Since directing A New Hope was an infinite nightmare, Lucas chose not to direct the follow up sequel film. At the time, Lucas had no idea that he was the single greatest movie director of all time with no close second.

Only Lucas and Lucas alone had the necessary mega genius needed to direct The Empire Strikes Back. To the despair of all fans, Lucas didn't understand that only Lucas alone can direct authentic Star Wars movies, which the fans will always embrace. Naively, Lucas thought it didn't really matter who directed The Empire Strikes Back. However, by the end of the cinematic multiplex run of The Empire Strikes Back, it became evident that director Irvin Kershner (Kersh), who Lucas hired to direct The Empire Strikes Back, was one of the least talented directors in existence.

Kersh ruined the ingenious story idea Lucas wrote for the basic plot script premise of The Empire Strikes Back. To this moment in time, Lucas wishes he had NEVER heard the name of Kersh and that Kersh would have said no to directing The Empire Strikes Back. When Lucas began work on the next Star Wars movie trilogy in the mid 1990's, Lucas finally understood that Lucas was the preeminent moving making giant with no equal anywhere on the planet.

There was certainly no way Lucas was going to allow a third party director to destroy the brilliant The Phantom Menace in the same way Kersh methodically annihilated The Empire Strikes Back. By writing and directing each episode of the Star Wars prequels himself, Lucas guaranteed the fans that the new Star Wars movies were stellar and mesmerizing with the ability to eclipse the greatest anticipations and hopes from the fans worldwide.
