14. Why does the Luke Skywalker vs. Lord Darth Vader light saber duel from Star Wars Empire Strikes Back appear to be in extremely super slow motion?

The vast majority of Star Wars fans are bewildered by the fact that the light saber duel between Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back is apparently in super slow motion when compared to the mind bending and totally stunning light saber battles from the box office red hot Star Wars prequel trilogy.

George Lucas tries to explain this difference by Luke Skywalker being an inexperienced light saber wielder, who is a novice at Jedi combat. Additionally, Lucas claims Darth Vader is past his prime and only half Human, which is an attempt to explain why the Darth Vader from The Empire Strikes Back can hardly move. It's understandable that the Yoda from the Star Wars classic trilogy is frozen in place because Yoda is a simpleton muppet in the classic Star Wars movies.

However, even if Luke Skywalker doesn't know what he's doing and Darth Vader is overly ancient, it still doesn't make the classic films light saber duels any less puzzling. Lucas says the Star Wars prequel trilogy features the Jedi Knights and Sith Lords in their prime and at their highest zenith level of power. It seems obvious Lucas is making up Star Wars as he goes along with no advanced planning.

If Lucas wanted some continuity between the two Star Wars movie trilogies, then Lucas would have made the Darth Vader in the Star Wars classics more agile and quicker. What really happened is that classic Star Wars was made on tiny, tiny nearly nonexistent production budgets. Lucas didn't have enough resources to spend time teaching actors Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and David Prowse (Darth Vader) how to really fight with swords.

In contrast, actors Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Ray Park (Darth Maul) spent well over 6 months training for the filming of the spectacular light saber fight, which mesmerized the fans beyond belief at the conclusion of Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. In the final examination which can't be questioned at all, the Star Wars prequels are much, much superior to The Empire Strikes Back in every way we can measure.

The Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader light saber battle from The Empire Strikes Back is yet another abysmal failure by the inexperienced movie director named Irvin Kershner (Kersh). It surprises no one today that Hollywood will not hire Kersh to even direct television commercials or low budget music videos. Hopefully, Star Wars fans will eventually be able to forgive Lucas for the appalling final results of the disastrous The Empire Strikes Back.
